The Reading for today is From Romans 8:1-6”
Concerning the meaning of Salvation: 1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh; 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace”
Many perceive “salvation” only in terms of whether our immortal beings will spend eternity in the flames of “Hell” or in the raptures of “Heaven.” More studious ones will use instead, the contrast of the “Lake of Fire” versus the “New Earth.” The apostle, here, recasts this matter as being in bondage to sin and death or being “free” from the law of sin and death.” This understanding accords with the words of Christ which say: John 17:3 “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
In these words of Jesus we begin to comprehend that salvation is not about employing some trick which will reassign our eternal souls from misery to joy, but an internal CHANGE which allows the enlivened soul to perceive the nature and purpose of the God who created us and so to partake of his joy, and the Lord who has redeemed us.
Our brother Alma points out some of the leading indicators of this fundamental shift in who we are: Alma3:27 “And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, Have ye spiritually been born of God? 28 Have ye received his image in your countenances? 29 Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts? 30 Do ye exercise faith in the redemption of him who created you? 31Do you look forward with an eye of faith, and view this mortal body raised in immortality, and this corruption raised in incorruption, to stand before God, to be judged according to the deeds which have been done in the mortal body? 32 I say unto you, Can you imagine to yourselves that ye hear the voice of the Lord, saying unto you, in that day, Come unto me ye blessed, for behold, your works have been the works of righteousness upon the face of the earth?”
Alma is asking this of the members of the church. Many choose to view their membership in this or that church as their “get out of jail free” card, and so look to their inclusion in that organization as the key to their salvation, but the scriptures look at this change of heart as the avenue of escape from the clutches of sin and death.
This statement is not to belittle the assembling of ourselves together and being strengthened and nurtured spiritually, but to help us see that when we assemble together we need to be focused on what the CHANGE is in us, that God is seeking to produce. What is the knowledge of Him that we need to incorporate not merely into a litany of stored facts about God – rather what is the knowledge of Him that we need to employ in our lives that we will be like him and so able to dwell in His presence with joy, and not be ashamed. – for so we may escape the fate of those of the 2nd resurrection – as it is written: “Mosiah 11:133 “And it shall come to pass that when the second trump shall sound, then shall they that never knew me come forth, and shall stand before me; 134 And then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, that I am their Redeemer; but they would not be redeemed. 135 And then will I confess unto them, that I never knew them; and they shall depart into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”
Holy Father help us ever to cleave to those principles of Light which reveal the divine nature, that we may ever walk therein to be transformed into the image of thy Son, that as we were in the beginning created after that image, so we may in the end show the marks of that nature in our being, both soul and body. In the name of Jesus our lord we ask it. Amen.
